10 Simple iPhone Photography Tips For Mums from a Professional Photographer

How to get the best results photographing your littles with an iPhone

As a mum of two (and a photographer), I know how quickly these moments with your little ones pass — and how hard it can be to capture them amidst the chaos of everyday life. But with a few simple tips (and a bit of patience), your iPhone can become a beautiful tool to help you had onto those memories. Because everyday life can feel just as magical when it’s seen with love.

Here’s how:

  1. Look for soft light
Natural light is key. Turn off overhead light and bring your child near a window or open door — early morning or late afternoon light tends to be most flattering.

  2. Get on their level
Crouch, sit or lie down — capturing the world from their perspective creates much more connection in your images.

  3. Use natural frames
Look for ways to frame your child using elements around you — doorways, windows, trees, cot rails. It helps draw the eye and adds a sense of storytelling.

  4. Capture the details

Focus on the little details - their tiny fingers, messy curls, milk-drunk smiles. It’s the quiet moments that tell the real story.

  5. Play with the composition
Try tilting your iPhone slightly for a more dynamic, diagonal composition which adds a subtle sense of movement and energy.

  6. Keep the background simple
Choose a clean, calm backdrop to avoid distractions. A plain wall, bedsheet or tidy corner of a room works wonders.

  7. Let them be
Skip the “say cheese” — the best photos happen in the in-between. Let them snack, snuggle, explore. Look for connection and movement rather than perfection.

  8. Use the self-timer
You deserve to be in the frame too. Set your phone on a shelf or chair, switch on the timer, and jump in. Even if it’s messy and unplanned — those are often the photos that mean the most.

  9. Try the flash
If the light is fading, try turning on the flash instead of letting the shutter drag (which causes blur). A flash photo turned black and white can feel beautifully moody and timeless.

  10. Edit softly

Just a gentle boost to brightness or warmth can lift your image — keep it light and natural.

And if you’re ready to put the phone down and be fully present in the frame — I’d love to help. My family and motherhood sessions are relaxed, natural and filled with connection. No pressure, no forced poses — just honest, artful images of you with the people you love most.
